Bariatric Surgery and Losing Weight

In recent years, stomach surgery for obesity and weight loss has become a solution for anyone whose health is threatened by their weight. The words “weight loss stomach surgery” are widely used to describe procedures that are performed not only on the stomach but also on the intestines.

Types of bariatric surgery and weight loss

Obesity stomach surgery reduces the size of the stomach so that the patient feels full after eating a smaller than normal quantity of food. This type of bariatric surgery is termed ‘restrictive surgery’ because it restricts the intake of food that a person consumes.

Stomach surgery procedures generally fall into these categories.

Restrictive techniques, as mentioned above.

Malabsorptive techniques which reduce the length of the intestine that food passes through. Consequently, the body absorbs less food that can be turned into fat.

Finally, there are combination procedures that may involve both the stomach and the intestines, using the restrictive and malabsorptive strategies.

The success rate for weight loss stomach surgery is around 80 percent. In other words, one procedure in five usually doesn’t get the desired results. In most cases, it’s not because the surgery is unsuccessful: it’s because the patient doesn’t follow accepted aftercare recommendations related to lifestyle changes.
