Blood Glucose Meter Testing
A blood glucose meter is useful for diabetics or others who want to check their blood sugar levels regularly. This can be a good idea for many people, especially in view of current trends of overeating and obesity. The best way to test for type 2 diabetes (which tends to develop later in life) is a blood sugar test known as the fasting plasma glucose test. This diabetes supply testing involves taking a blood sample in order to test the blood sugar levels. The diabetes tests would normally be administered by a doctor or nurse. Patients usually fast for a period of time so that their blood sugar levels are not affected by any recent intake of food or beverages. This test is not 100% reliable as it only measures the levels of sugar in the blood at a certain moment in time. A hemoglobin A1c test is generally even more accurate as it measures blood sugar levels over a continued period of time.
An oral glucose tolerance test involves fasting for a certain amount of time before the patient’s blood sugars are tested. The patient is tested and then given a high glucose drink before being tested again to check how their body adjusts to a high intake of glucose. This test using a blood glucose meter can supply the doctor with enough information to diagnose a patient who may have any variety of diabetes or pre-diabetes.
