If you’re finding yourself worrying about the “pits” inside your mouth where the gum seems to be separating from the teeth over time, you have to do something about it. Gum recession can be caused by several factors. A person with abnormally positioned teeth may show symptoms of gum recession early on. Crowding of teeth may also be the main culprit as the gum tissues can only cover some of the teeth. Some people may also belong to families with hereditary gum disorders such as too thin gingival tissue. But even in hereditary cases, bad brushing habits may be the trigger. In any case, you have to stop this phenomenon of gum recession before it completely destroys your teeth and your smile. Here are some ways that you can do to prevent receding gumline.

1. Proper Brushing

Overaggressive brushing may be the main cause of receding gums. If your gums bleed after you brush your teeth, you should consider getting a soft-bristle toothbrush. To brush better, start with slow sweeping, up-and-down strokes, then finish with circular strokes. You should slow down when you’re on the gum line.

Moreover, some people are not as discerning about the teeth products they use as others. Some toothpaste brands are extremely ridden with chemicals that can contribute to the continual recession of gums. The appropriate toothpaste for you may be a gentler one.

2. Brush Right After Eating

It’s not enough to pop a mint or chew gum right after eating. Bacteria colonies develop a few minutes after eating, which could disrupt the normal flora inside your mouth. The bacteria could continue to build up as you talk and breathe. These bacterial colonies will not stay on the teeth’s enamel, but on the soft gum line.

Some brands of chewing gums claim to protect teeth, but these are not enough. Bacteria may not be on the gums or teeth, but on the debris that continue to stay inside the mouth until you brush your teeth.

3. Dentist Visits

A visit to the dentist may take a chunk off your timetable but this is necessary if you feel that your gums are receding. The dentist is the best person to tell you what to do, and how to avoid gum recession. Receding gums happen at any time, and more frequently as you get older. If you smoke, you may need to discontinue because smoking contributes to gum disorders.
