What To Do After Getting An ADHD Diagnosis
Many children who have an ADHD Diagnosis don’t grow out of it before they reach adulthood. About half of them will carry the condition into adulthood. As the kids grow older, the problems caused by their hyperactivity, inability to pay attention, and impulsiveness can become issues of poor self esteem, substance abuse, and even hurt their ability to get and hold down jobs. ADHD treatment should be tried.
There are a number of different ways to treat ADHD, and each one works differently with different people.In some cases, they might not even work. Some therapy doesn’t use medication, but depends entirely upon behavioral modification therapy. By eliminated sugar, food coloring and preservatives from the child’s food has also proven to be quite effective. Many children who have gone through these treatments find themselves to be much improved in their ability to pay attention and follow the rules in school. They are more able to deal with personal relationships both with family and friends.
In order to get the most from the prescribed treatments, it is very important for teachers, parents, school counselors and the child to be totally educated about the disorder and the treatments prescribed. In order to effectively manage the child’s behavior, administration of medication is also the responsibility when the child is in school. Part of effectively managing behavior requires a flow of communication in both directions continuously.
What will your doctor recommend in terms of medications? Treatment may include stimulants like Ritalin, Concerta, and Metadate. Amphetamines like Adderall, Dexedrine, Dextrostat, or Vyvanse (a newer drug) may be recommended. Vyvanse is thought to cause less dependence than other older stimulants.
Wellbutrin which is an antidepressant which is used sometimes where a problem is seen with some of the stimulants. In order to reduce stimulant side effects like involuntary tics and movements and insomnia are sometimes treated with antidepressants. It is better tolerated with fewer side effects than some of the tricyclic antidepressants like Pamelor, Norpramin, Aventyl, or Tofranil. Nonstimulants Intuniv and Strattera are proven very effective when used to treat ADHD.
Receiving an ADHD Diagnosis isn’t the worst thing you can hear. With the right treatment and medication, they can become happy, healthy, functioning adults.
