Why Do I Crave Sugary Foods?
Most people enjoy sweet foods. In fact, humans are predisposed through their genetics to desire sweet things. Science has long known that there are sweet “receptors” on the tongue that almost ensure that we will want a sweet treat every now and again.
Scientists agree that this predisposition for sweets is because nature needed to ensure that people were drawn to the taste of foods that supply essential vitamins and nutrients, such as apples, oranges and bananas.
Even so, a desire for a piece of chocolate after a meal or even for an apple as a mid-afternoon snack is not the same as a sugar craving.
A craving goes beyond simple desire; it is a physical reaction to a physiological need. The body craves what it feels it is missing. And, with sugar addiction, the body interprets a lack of sugar, and other high-carb foods, as an actual nutritional deficiency.
